Course Description

3 college credit hours

In this online class, students read and analyze American literature. The course surveys a wide sampling of American writers, poets, and traditions, including the narratives of early American explorers; Mark Twain; F. Scott Fitzgerald; Zora Neale Hurston and other writers of the Harlem Renaissance; William Faulkner; and contemporary writers such as Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Dagoberto Gilb.

Introduction to masterpieces of literary tradition, emphasizing historical, generic, and thematic connections.

Prerequisites
Completion of at least thirty semester hours of coursework, including English 603A, Rhetoric and Writing 306, 306Q, or Tutorial Course 603A, and a passing score on the reading section of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test.
